Dream City was meant to be the legacy of the world’s first trillionaire, Dallas Faraday. Faraday, like many people at the end of the 22nd century, believed there was no viable way to save Earth from the slow-moving environmental collapse decimating the planet. His solution to the unfolding environmental disaster was to terraform the Moon to build a shining new set of utopian cities.
Despite his considerable wealth, Faraday needed investors to fund the massive project. As proof of idea, he decided to build a prototype city in California, close to the post-collapse remains of Fresno. He had to prove that not only was his terraforming plan viable but that he could produce self-sustaining cities that would appease the rabid pro-environmental lobbies that emerged after the first mass death events. The first settlers of Dream City came because of the promise of one day living in their city on the moon, and a chance to be part of a grand experiment that might save humanity.
Only three years into the project, Faraday suffered a massive heart attack and died. Multiple generations of trusted advisors have been running Dream City since. Lunara unofficially controls and owns Dream City. Some believe Faraday’s consciousness was uploaded from his deathbed and was meant to remain in charge of big decisions in Dream City, but there are many skeptics. The actions of Lunara since Faraday’s death (and especially recent initiatives) seem to point to this not being true, as the company has seemingly abandoned Faraday’s dream of the moon becoming humanity’s savior and second home.
Dream City is the world’s first gigacity, with a population beyond 100 million residents. As Faraday developed and refined the early plans for the city, he purposefully built high-density housing and efficient infrastructure. The current population, however, far exceeds the initial plans, which capped the number of residents at around 50 million.
