The Gardens

A vast subterranean level of the city produces the majority of the food for DC and recycles the waste. Despite its ecological-sounding name, work in the gardens is grueling, sweaty, and dangerous, reminiscent of mining in the 1800s. Many of the robots and machines that once ran the system autonomously have begun to fall into disrepair; after all, they were only meant to last until the TRIPs made it to the moon. These days very few workers in the city are willing to risk their lives getting lost in the garden’s catacombs just to repair something that will break as soon as you get back up top. Why bother when you could join a gang—same risk, but way better pay.
